Broadband Explained
What is it?
Broadband is the common term for a high bandwidth Internet connection. Broadband services are capable of transmitting data at much faster rates than a standard modem connection. A Broadband Internet connection is 'always on' - you don't need to dial-up every time you want to 'log on'. This means no more engaged tones, no screeching noises from your modem and no delays.
Why would I want it?
Most Internet users would like to improve the speed of their connection. On a standard modem Internet connection e-mails with large file attachments and graphic intensive Web sites can take ages to download. Viewing video on the Web, or listening to music can also prove problematic.

A Broadband connection can improve all of these and will allow you to use the Internet in an completely different way.

How is it delivered?
Broadband can be delivered via a number of different technologies:
  • Leased Lines
  • Cable
  • ADSL
ADSL has made Broadband available to smaller organisations and consumers. ADSL transforms an existing BT telephone line into a high-speed digital line capable of carrying data at up to 40 times the speed of a conventional modem.
What are the advantages?
ADSL has several key advantages over a standard Internet connection:
  • Fast - up to 40 times faster than a standard modem connection
  • 'Always On' - No waiting to 'log on', no engaged tones, no screeching noises from your modem
  • Uses your existing BT phone line
  • Make and receive phone calls at the same time as being online
